A study by NASSCOM says that the faster growth of digital technology is pushing the industry towards automation. Last year IT, a sector that has been generating highly paid jobs so far, stared at its biggest job meltdown ever.

Rise of robot technologies

Newer technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), data sciences, 3D modeling, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and cloud architecture promise higher productivity, economic growth, increased efficiencies, safety, and convenience. But these technologies also raise questions about the broader impact of automation on jobs, skills, wages, and the nature of work itself.

A CIEL HR Services survey predicts that nearly 2 lakh jobs are expected to evaporate in the sector by 2019. The survey says most of the job loss will hit segments like IT infrastructure support, testing and software development.

‘Reskill’ is the requisite

While the industry’s link to the global economy and the US is a major reason for the IT bloodbath, digital and automation technologies open new career choices, provided they adapt. Adding to the survey, NASSCOM also states that in order to thrive, at least 40% of the 4 million workforce of the Indian IT industry needs to reskill. If not, many of them risk losing their jobs.
